Rule Clarifications
1. Ownership & Draft Exclusivity
Once a player is drafted, they are locked to that roster for the duration of the matchup.
No player may be drafted by both players unless the game mode explicitly allows it.
If a player becomes active through a substitution, that player inherits the drafted player's roster spot and becomes that roster's new active player.
2. Alternates vs. Substitutions
Alternates - Pre-Game Lineup Protection
Alternates exist to protect against non-starters. Each team draft includes 1 alternate player. Before the game begins, BaseRace checks the official MLB starting lineups.
- If one of your drafted starters is not in the starting lineup, your alternate automatically replaces that player.
- If all drafted starters are starting, your alternate does not become active.
- If both your drafted player and alternate are not in the starting lineup for a team, you have until first pitch to select a replacement player.
- If no replacement is selected before the game begins, BaseRace will automatically assign a player from that game who has not already been drafted by another player.
Substitutions - In-Game Player Replacements
Once the MLB game begins, official baseball substitutions are part of the game.
- Your drafted player keeps all points already earned.
- The MLB player replacing them inherits their roster spot.
- The replacement player becomes your new active player and can continue earning points for your roster.
3. Tie Breakers - Walk Off Rule
Classic Mode & Alliance Modes
If a matchup ends tied, BaseRace uses the Walk Off Rule. The player who earned the most recent BaseRace scoring play wins the matchup.
If both teams have players score the same number of points on that play, the tiebreaker moves backward to the previous BaseRace scoring play, continuing until a winner is determined.
Rivalry Mode
If a Rivalry matchup ends tied, the win goes to the player whose chosen team won the actual MLB game.
4. Official Lineup Lock
Drafts remain open until official starting lineups are posted. Once lineups lock, alternates are applied automatically, active rosters are finalized, and no further manual roster changes can be made.
Exception: if both a drafted player and alternate are unavailable, replacement selection remains open until first pitch.
5. Official MLB Statistics Rule
BaseRace scoring uses official MLB recorded statistics. If MLB later changes a scoring decision, such as hit to error or error to hit, BaseRace scoring updates accordingly.
Official MLB scoring is the final source of truth.
6. Suspended, Delayed & Postponed Games
If a game is postponed before first pitch, the matchup is canceled.
- If a game becomes suspended or postponed during play and does not resume that same day before the start of the 5th inning, the matchup is canceled.
- If the game is past the start of the 5th inning, the win goes to whoever is leading when the game officially ends.
7. Doubleheaders
Doubleheader games are treated as separate matchups. Players drafted for Game 1 do not automatically carry into Game 2 unless the matchup was created specifically for Game 2.
8. Official Statistics Corrections
Live scoring is unofficial. If MLB issues a scoring correction after the game ends, BaseRace scores update to match the official ruling.
9. DNP / Late Scratch Handling
If a drafted player is scratched before first pitch and is not in the official lineup, alternate rules apply.
If a player starts but exits early due to injury, illness, ejection, managerial decision, or substitution, substitution rules apply.
Every Base Matters
BaseRace is a simple game designed to keep you engaged in every baseball game you watch. Whether you're watching with your kids, spouse, friends, or someone who normally isn't into baseball, BaseRace adds just enough friendly competition to make every inning more exciting, giving you a reason to care about both sides of the game!
The best part? The rules are incredibly simple.
Pick 3 players from each team. Every base your players touch earns you 1 point. Hits, walks, stolen bases, errors, and more. Every base matters. When the game ends, the player with the most points wins.
Drafts are quick, scoring is easy to follow, and every at-bat becomes an opportunity to score. Click for more details about the game modes.
